Maths

Intent Statement

At HHJS we are committed to fostering an enthusiasm for and confidence in maths. We value a maths curriculum that is creative, engaging and that all children have access to and can make progress in lessons. We believe at HHJS that maths is the foundation for understanding the world. We want our children to know the purpose behind their learning and apply relevant knowledge to their everyday lives, as they become fluent, determined mathematicians and risk takers, who can confidently explain their understanding and solve problems.

Our children develop the necessary skills to make them ‘deep thinkers’, acquiring maths skills that can be recalled quickly and transferred and applied in different contexts. They need to be able to make secure connections across various areas of maths.

Maths is taught using a mastery approach, which has number at its heart. We follow the White Rose primary scheme of learning, ensuring they develop a deep understanding of core mathematical concepts. Lessons include a range of concrete (manipulatives), pictorial and abstract representations. Children get an opportunity to consolidate their understanding, whilst others are challenged to ‘go deeper’. A whole class teaching approach gives everyone a chance to collaborate together and succeed.
